Fairfax Home School Athletic Association

Basketball Program Information

The objective of the FHS basketball program is to develop highly competitive athletes while encouraging them to grow in their pursuit of Christ. FHS fields boys and girls teams at the middle school, junior varsity, and varsity levels.

FHS competes in the Northern Virginia Independent Athletic Conference (nviac.com) and with the Virginia Home School Athletic Association (vhsaa.net). We play regular season games against teams within our conferences, in addition to outside teams. FHS participates in championship tournaments for both conferences, and in the East Coast Nationals Tournament (hspn.net), where they compete against homeschool teams from up and down the east coast.

Conditioning: Basketball conditioning runs from July to early/mid-August and will then pick back up again after Labor Day (break due to gym closures, though there may be some conditioning during the break if gyms outside of FCPS can be secured) and takes place on two to three week-day evenings per week in FCPS gyms in Fairfax County. All athletes interested in playing on an FHS basketball team are invited to participate in the conditioning season.

Tryouts: Try-outs are held in late September, at which point the teams for the competition season are finalized. Coaches select and invite players to participate on the middle school, junior varsity, and varsity teams. Not all players who try out are given a spot on a team.

Season: Practices take place 2-4 nights per week and begin in October. Games begin in late November and go through early to mid-March. The FHS home game facility is the RAC at George Mason University and away games are held at schools and facilities in and around northern Virginia. Longer travel distances should be anticipated for VHSAA and HSPN tournaments, as well as for some regular season games.

Costs:

1) Registration fee: $50, must be paid before an athlete can participate in conditioning or tryouts.

2) Season fee: Final fee for the year will be determined based on budget and communicated during tryouts (historically between $400 and $800 per athlete). Once a spot on the team is offered, the athlete has 48 hours to accept the spot on the team and pay season fees.

Other equipment: Each athlete should have a pair of dedicated basketball shoes that are used only on indoor courts. Uniforms will be provided by FHS.
