Tennis Information
The FHS Hawks Boys Tennis program aims to develop competitive homeschool tennis players and help athletes grow in pursuing Jesus Christ. The Tennis program is a high school varsity program (with hopes to offer a junior varsity program in the future as the program grows). All homeschool players grades 7-12 are welcome to try out for a roster spot. As a team, we are a community that is committed to spurring one another on to grow in our athletic abilities, as well as in our personal, and spiritual lives. Coaches and athletes are expected to extend support and accountability to each other as we seek to honor God through competitive athletics.
Conditioning: Pre-season conditioning can take place as early as the fall prior, but by latest early January, and is weather dependent. Our goals during this time are to build an aerobic base and develop groundstrokes. We learn warm-ups, tennis lingo, stroke development & match play basics.
Tryouts: Late January/Early February: Tryouts can be combined with pre-season conditioning. Tryouts help coaches to assess players, so the more frequently a prospective student-athlete attends the more helpful (with mandatory minimum attendance at one session). In-season matches limit the number of players to the top 6-8, so we are looking for athletes who are committed to working hard and contributing to positive team dynamics.
Season: February-May
Matches: 2021-22 saw the inaugural season of both our girls' and boys' tennis programs. We were delighted to begin with 5 matches but hope to see an increase in matches as our program grows. Locations will vary from the local area to a 1-2 hour drive.
Match Play: 6 singles & 3 doubles. Exhibition matches for all others when possible.
Practices: Practices are held a minimum of 2x/wk at an outdoor tennis facility, usually in Alexandria/Annandale/Springfield. Practices will be canceled 1 hour in advance if courts are unplayable.
Athletes are expected to engage in some type of fitness program the other 3 days of the week, to include cardio, weights, stretching & agility.
Costs:
1) Registration fee: $30, must be paid before an athlete can participate in conditioning or tryouts.
2) Season fee: The season fee covers court fees, balls, insurance, uniforms, etc. & runs about $350-400. Once a spot on the team is offered, the athlete has 48 hours to accept the spot on the team by paying the fee.
3) Uniforms: Uniform tops are the property of FHS & must be returned at the end of the season. If uniforms are not returned, a costly fee will ensue as it's difficult to replace one uniform. The uniform is completed by a pair of black shorts provided by the athlete.
Other Equipment: Tennis/court shoes, racquet & racquet bag are provided by the athlete.
